Għaxaq

Għaxaq (or Hal Għaxaq ) is a village in the south of Malta with 4510 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2010). It is located 6.4 km from Valletta. The place has largely retained its village character; Agriculture and Livestock, still define the lives of hundreds of its inhabitants. Until April 26, 1626 Għaxaq belonged to Żejtun. At the time, the place had 340 inhabitants in 77 houses. Its name probably derives from the family " Axiaq " from; the motto of Għaxaq called " Laeta Sustineo " ( lit. " Clear Empor hold" so mutatis mutandis probably " head high ").

To 1767, the population fell very suddenly of over 1,000 inhabitants, down to about 350. This was due to diseases and Turkish raids along the Maltese coast.

The new parish church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary ( Assumption). It was consecrated on 2 May 1784 by Bishop Vincenzo Labini.
