Gaz de France

The Gaz de France S. A. (GDF ) was a French -listed natural gas company, which was merged in July 2008 with Suez GDF Suez.

Company History

On the initiative of Marcel Paul, who campaigned for the nationalization of electricity and gas, Gaz de France was founded in 1946 together with Electricité de France as a state enterprise.

In 2005 the company was partially privatized; Gaz de France was in July 2005 in one of the world's ten largest IPOs of the year 2005 to the stock market, the French government, however, remained with about 80 percent of the most important shareholder. In 2006, Gaz de France announced plans to merge with its competitor Suez, which were reacted with the respective Annual General Meetings on 16 July 2008. The French government was this merger with 35.7 percent majority shareholder of the entire group.
