Gazzaniga

Gazzaniga ( Gagieniga in Lombard ) is a municipality in the Province of Bergamo in the Italian region Lombardy with 5135 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Gazzaniga is located 15 km northeast of the provincial capital of Bergamo and 60 km northeast of the city of Milan.

The neighboring municipalities are albino, Aviatico, Cene, Cornalba, Costa Serina, Fiorano al Serio and Vertova.

History

Traces of human life in the area around Gazzaniga can be traced back to the Bronze Age. For the first time a municipality in the year 476 is mentioned as the barbarian ruler Odoacer conquered it. In 1397 the town was destroyed by the Ghibellines, before only a year later, the Guelphs pillaged the village. Later Gazzaniga belonged to the Republic of Venice.
