Gdynia Aquarium

The Aquarium Gdynia (Polish: Akwarium Gdyńskie ) is a museum in the port of Gdynia.

History

The museum at the yacht harbor of Gdynia was opened on 21 June in 1971 and is now one of the largest aquariums in Poland. It arose from the Institute of Fisheries Science ( Instytut Rybacki Morski w Gdyni ), the oldest marine research institution in Poland. By 2003 the museum was renamed as Muzeum Oceanograficzne i Akwarium Morskie. In 2003, extensive refurbishment took place, also a new glass facade was built. On 12 May 2003 it was reopened as Gdynia Aquarium, and received in 2005 the status of a zoo. The museum is involved in the EU projects 4 SEAS and BalticMuseums 2.0.

Aquariums

We present four major areas of life of marine and freshwater organisms: the coral reef, the ocean, the Amazon and the Baltic Sea. Inhabitants of these ecosystems will be presented in an exhibition area of about 900 m², spread over three floors. A total of 1,500 specimens of 250 marine species such as freshwater - mostly fish, corals, reptiles and invertebrates - presented in 68 tanks with a capacity of 200 to 10,000 liters.

Museum Education

The Museum Education was established in 1998 to raise awareness among the visitors for marine biology, marine ecology and environmental protection. Since then, numerous students of Tri-City and from all over Poland participated in museum educational programs; in the school year 2007/2008 there were 27,369 students.

The museum's educational offers are mainly for children, teenagers, students and fixed groups. The exchange offers are tailored differently: from tours of multimedia and film screenings, workshops and laboratory visits to trips to the Baltic Sea with a cutter. The frame for the museum education was designed elaborately: In a separate cinema room the marine ecology of the Baltic Sea is conveyed in movies - from the birds on the Polish coast to local shark species. In the biology lab to students can approach the scientific work and research. For the youngest visitors a preschool room has been set up that allows for age-appropriate access.
