Gedaliah

Gedaliah ben Ahikam was the Babylonian governor in the province of Judah. He was ( BC about July 29 587 ) used after the conquest of Jerusalem by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar II 587 BC.

He resided in Mizpah. After only seven months in office, he was assassinated in a bomb attack by Ishmael ben Netanya. Yishmael ben Netanya belonged to the army of the newly defunct royal house of the house of David, that previously ruled the kingdom of Judah. Most of the not deport Jews fled to for fear of the Babylonians to Egypt. See, 2 Kings 25.22 to 26.

His assassination commemorate religious Jews on Tishri 3 with a day of fasting, the Zom Gedaliah.
