gedit

Gedit (short for GNOME editor) is UTF -8 compatible free text editor for the GNOME desktop environment. It builds on the GNOME and GTK libraries. With support for the virtual file system gio in GLib, GNOME's Help system and drag and drop with other GNOME applications, it integrates into the GNOME environment. Several files can be processed simultaneously in separate tabs.

The first version of the program was released in April 1998. The aim was to provide an associated text editor for the recently launched GNOME project. The text editor is now also available for Windows users.

Functions

Gedit allows syntax highlighting for C, C , CSS, Java, HTML, XML, Python, Perl, PHP, and a number of other programming and scripting languages ​​.

From users and programmers with a variety of plug-ins are provided, such as autocomplete for LaTeX documents or a Python shell. In February 2010, a plugin has been developed which allows collaborative writing. It builds on the same program library as the text editor Gobby.

On the basis of the gedit editor gPHPEdit was created in 2003, which specializes not only in PHP on HTML and CSS.

History of development

The first two digits of the version number are based on GNOME.

Gedit is now 2.0 depending on GtkSourceView and therefore offers improved syntax highlighting.

The following translations have been improved: Czech, Spanish, Japanese, Slovak; following translations were added: Uighur language Gaulish language.
