Gediz River

The Gediz ( the ancient Hermus ) is a river in Turkey in western Asia Minor and is 405 km to the Great Meander the second longest waters of the region.

The river rises in the mountains of Lydia between the mountain town of Gediz and the Murat Dagi ( 2309 meters), where the Great Meander has its northern source river Banaz. After about 300 km, it reaches at the ancient ruined city of Sardis, the wide east-west valley, flows through Manisa and flows 30 km northwest of Izmir and 10 km south-east of Foça in the Gulf of Izmir.

The mouth of the Gediz forms a more than 20 kilometers wide river delta, in the course of history - has markedly extended towards the sea - as well as the large and small meander. The southern Delta (opposite Izmir) forms an extensive wetland.
