Geert van Wou

Gerhard van Wou [ vaʊ̯ ], also Geert Wouters van Kampen, Gerhard Wou van Kampen, Gerhard de Wou (* 1440 in Hintham; † December 1527 in Kampen ) was a Dutch bell founders and created 1497 Gloriosa for the cathedral, but in the generally considered to be his masterpiece.

Life and work

As the son of the bell-founder Willem van Wou he came very early to the craft of casting bells in touch.

From 1474 there is an entry is in the book of citizens Hertogenbosch, where he is known as " Magister Gerardus de Woude ". From 1482 he is based in Kampen.

He is now regarded as one of the most important bell-founder of the late Middle Ages. Van Wou but was rich not only by the casting of bells, so he was, for example, in accounts of the city of Nijmegen as " Meyster Geryt bussengieter " ( cannon manufacturer ) refers to what the conclusion suggests that he also led other cast work.

Van Wou turned the first of his profession to that of consistent law that states that for the same alloy and at the same proportioned fins ( longitudinal profile of a bell), the frequencies of percussive sounds in inverse proportion to the lower diameters of the bells. This enabled him to calculate the required percussive sounds very accurately and thus to meet, during the meeting of percussion sounds can be described up to this point rather a godsend. In 1505 he poured 13 Bells for the Dom church in an unbroken scale ( diatonic ) of fis0 to cis2. In some inscriptions the respective interval is called, which in each case to strike note of the great bell ( fis0 ) refers. For example, is on the fifth bell Baptista:

The word means diapente Quinte; the strike note of the bell is cis1. Gerhard van Wou was also able to supplement with the aforementioned method also tonally matching bell to existing ones. In 1491 he filled the order, St. Michaelis Lüneburg four bells in b0, es1, f1 and g1 to supplement two existing bells in the beat tones c1 and d1. Two bells are preserved.

One of his students was Wolter Westerhues; in St. Andrew to Ahaus- Wüllen hanging bells of masters and students together in a peal.
