Geography

Geographical Location

Gefrees is located on the outer slopes of the western leg of the horseshoe Fichtelgebirges between Wallenstein and ox head. In the north the Münchberger gneiss plate, from the west approach foothills of the Franconian Forest and the south of the Main valley extends to the west.

Through the municipal area flow Ölschnitz, Lübnitz and Kornbach. The latter leads into the city in the Lübnitz, which opens into the Ölschnitz between Böseneck and Entenmühle.

History

Since 1336 Gefrees belonged to the rule of the Hohenzollern between Viscount of Nuremberg, later Margrave of Brandenburg- Bayreuth. In documents from the years 1403 and 1444 is called Gefrees city. From 1500 the town was in the Frankish Empire circle. The chief official of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth since 1792 coincided with this in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 to France and came to Bavaria in 1810. 1809 was the Battle of Gefrees. By 1929 Gefrees belonged to the district office Berneck, after its resolution to the district office or district from 1939 Munchberg. As part of the Bavarian Administrative Reform, the city closed on 1 July 1972 after a vote in the district of Bayreuth.
