Tokay Gecko ( Gekko gecko )

Gekko is a genus of small lizards of the family of geckos. Among the nocturnal and daytime hiding living members of the genus now includes 48 species (as of January 29, 2012 ).

Features

Species of the genus can be up to 30 cm tall. Adult specimens attain a head-body length of more than 10 cm, the largest species is the tokay gecko. The pupils are slit vertically. Fingers and toes are well developed.

Dissemination

Members of this genus mostly inhabit the Asian region of Pakistan, to China and to the New Hebrides. They are mostly arboreal of moderately moist and dense, but also open forest landscapes. Gekko eggs can a floating cover long distances, and colonize remote islands. The pups grow up without the presence of parents. In addition to birds, they are among the first colonizers of newly formed islands and colonize tropical atolls such as the South Pacific and the Seychelles.
