Geography

Geldersheim is located in Upper Werntal in the region Main- Rhön, three kilometers west of the independent city of Schweinfurt. There is only the district Geldersheim.

From west to east the Euerbach, which is called from the district boundary bending stream runs. It ends at Schweinfurt in the Wern. Direction Egenhausen is the forest area Asbach, the forest towards Sömmersdorf is called Foothill.

In the district of Geldersheim borders the municipalities Niederwerrn, Schweinfurt, Bergrheinfeld, Werneck, water and lots Euerbach.

History

Geldersheim was first mentioned in 763 in a document of the monastery of Fulda. In 976 Emperor Otto turned out II documents, as well as the Emperor Henry III. in 1049th Geldersheim was therefore central town in the area and the seat of a small imperial palace. Witnesses of this medieval era are still preserved choir of the former palace chapel and archaeological finds from the Carolingian- Ottonian period, which were found during archaeological excavations in the 60s, 70s and 80s of the 20th century.

Already in 1230 a large parish church was built in late-Romanesque style in addition to the old palace chapel. She was dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Until the collapse of the Bishopric of Würzburg in 1802 Geldersheim was a prosperous market town despite several major fires and wars. From 1500 to 1806 the city was in the Frankish Empire circle. The former tithe of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg was ceded to the secularisation of 1803 in Bavaria's favor in 1805, Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany to form the Grand Duchy of Würzburg and fell with this 1814 final at Bayern.

Culture and sights

The parish church of St. Nicholas with the Gaden surrounding them (former fortified church ). The Gaden in the south of the church housed Archaeological Museum displays numerous prehistoric and early historic finds from the municipality.
