Gellen

The yells and yells the Peninsula is a peninsula (called sandy hook ) at the southernmost end of the island Hiddensee. The southern part is as an important bird sanctuary and nature reserve is the protection zone I of the National Park Boddenlandscape assigned, so the public is not accessible.

It consists of glacial sand deposits and increases each year by a few meters further south. Due to the dredging of the shipping channel between the island of Bock and yells a compensatory coast is prevented as it is already typical of the eastern Baltic region with its numerous sandbars.

Topography

He is up to 500 meters wide and about 5 km long and only need a few feet high. Clearly the individual beach ridges can be seen. Topographically, it can be divided into two areas:

  • Altgellen ( Neuendorf to Klimphoresbucht )
  • Neugellen ( Klimphoresbucht to the southern tip ), emergence time from about the 12th century. The southern part of Neugellens is locked.

During the Neugellen grows to the south, sand is removed at Altgellen. South of Gellens a vast wind watts ( the Vierendehlgrund ) follows, the dry falls occasionally. The growth of Gellens has slowed sharply since about 1990, and will come in the next few decades to a halt, as he then abuts the southwest adjoining fairway.

Place names on the yells are from north to south:

  • Bank projections: Long Barg, Klimphoreshaken / Klemmhuernhaken, Langen rabbits Werderscher place Kl bow, Gr. stirrup
  • Bays and Riegen: Black Peter, Klemmhuern / Klimphoresbucht, Karkensee, Priestersee

There is an up to four meters high cliff, which does not, however, arises as the bramble of glacial deposits, but the dune formation on the west coast of Neugellens. On the Altgellen a coastal protection forest is planted for wind -resistant pines, to the south are also some individual birch and other trees. The majority, however, is covered with dune grasses, nutrient-poor grassland and heath.

Coastal protection

In 1864, it came as a result of a storm flood south of Neuendorf, the so-called buck to an 8 meter deep breakthrough. Despite intensive efforts to protect this could not be closed in the first decades, he broadened even to 250 meters. Only after the construction of the stone dam of yells again belonged to Hiddensee.

Today is the height of the Klimphoresbucht the risk of a breakdown. There the land is only 250 meters wide. Groynes (also stone groynes ), beach nourishment, artificial dunes and plantings of beach grass and pines counteract the erosion process on Altgellen.

Structures

Beginning of the 14th century, the church Gell, a small beacon ( Luchte called ) and the first port of the island Hiddensee were built here. The name Karkensee ( Kirchensee ) for a bay on the shut-off at Südgellen has yet pointed out.

A lighthouse that marks the northern entrance to the so-called Gell power, is now still on the peninsula.
