The Gelredome is the home stadium of the Dutch football club SBV Vitesse Arnhem. It was built from 1996-1998 in Arnhem and equipped with a closable roof. A special feature is the also portable gaming box that can be moved out for concerts or other events from the stadium.


Already in the 1980s there were plans for a new stadium Vitesse. At that time it was still playing in Nieuw- Monnikenhuize. The main reason for the plans was the future club president Karel Aalbers. On 12 July 1996, construction began on a meadow at Batavierenweg, south of the Rhine. The same day, the official name was announced: GelreDome. The GelreDome opened with a game against Vitesse NAC Breda, Arnhem won 4-1, on March 25, 1998.

On 28 and 29 March 1998, the first pop concerts took place, as the Spice Girls appeared as first known pop group in the stadium. 1999, the millionth visitor of the stadium was recorded a year later the two-million - visitors has exceeded its limit.


The Gelredome is regularly hosts concerts and events. For example, there appeared to musicians such as Metallica, U2, Rammstein, Coldplay, Britney Spears, Pearl Jam, André Rieu, Madonna, Prince and Tina Turner. European Football Championship 2000

The GelreDome was one of the venues for the European football championship in 2000, which was held in Belgium and the Netherlands. There were three group games take place in Arnhem.
