Geminus

Geminus of Rhodes († 1st century BC in Rhodes ), in Latinized form Geminus, was a Greek astronomer, mathematician and Stoics.

Geminus was a pupil of Posidonius. He lived around 70 BC in Rome, and there wrote the Eisagoge ice ta phainomena (translated: "Introduction to the phenomena " ), a very special time for his performance on astronomy.

Geminus assumed already that the fixed stars are at different distances from us. Perhaps the Antikythera mechanism from Geminus of Rhodes ' hand comes. From Geminos the first mention of a terrestrial globe: He pointed to Crates of Mallos, who had designed a globe ( see Vogel (1995 ), p 82).

There were also at least six volume work on mathematical thinking. The plant is known only from quotations. There are also Arab partial translations.

The lunar crater Geminus is named after him.
