GenBank

GenBank is one of the three major DNA sequence databases, as part of the National Institutes of Health of the United States of America. Currently, the database contains more than 189 million records with a total of over 299 billion bases of more than 380,000 organisms (as of December 2010). Apart from GenBank also the " European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL / EBI) Nucleotide Sequence Database " (EMBL - Bank) and the " DNA Data Bank of Japan" exist ( DDBJ ). The sequence data of these three databases are daily calibrated to each other (see the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration ).

Since the sequence information contained in these databases represent an important basis for the work of researchers who demand the most scientific journals, the filing of new sequence data in these archives.

GenBank is freely accessible. Sequence data can be accessed by anyone, both individually using Web interface as well as on a large scale via FTP.
