Gene Sedric

Gene Sedric, actually Eugene Sedric Hall, ( born June 17, 1907 in St. Louis, † April 3, 1963 in New York City ) was an American tenor saxophonist and clarinetist.

Life and work

Sedric was the son of ragtime pianist Paul " Can Can " Sedric. Prior to joining Fats Waller in 1934, he already had a small music career behind him, played with Charlie Creath (1922 ), in the pleasure boat bands of Fate Marable and Dewey Jackson, then in the big bands Sam Wooding ( 1923-1934 ) and Fletcher Henderson. 1938 photos were taken for the first time under his own name; In 1943 he had his own band; in the 1940s he also worked with Jimmy McPartland, Bobby Hackett and Phil Moore. In the 1950s he worked, inter alia, Mezz Mezzrow with ( in 1953 in France, where he recorded for the label Swing) and Conrad Janis.

Sedric was considered a master of the " Big Sound ", and was the clarinet teacher of the famous amateur jazz musician Woody Allen.
