Gene Snyder

Marion Gene Snyder ( born January 26, 1928 in Louisville, Kentucky, † February 16, 2007 in Naples, Florida ) was an American politician. Between 1963 and 1987 he represented with a break in the years 1965 to 1967 the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Gene Snyder attended the public schools of his home and then the DuPont Manual High School. Subsequently, he studied until 1950 at the University of Louisville, among others Jura. After his were made in the same year admitted to the bar he began in Louisville to work in this profession. From 1954 to 1958 he was the legal representative of the community Jeffersontown. Between 1958 and 1962 he was a member of the county council in Jefferson County. At that time, Snyder was also in insurance, real estate business, working in agriculture and in residential construction.

Politically, Snyder member of the Republican Party. In the years 1968, 1976, 1980 and 1984, he participated as a delegate to the respective Republican National Conventions, to which Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan were finally nominated as a presidential candidate. In the congressional elections of 1962, Snyder was in the third electoral district of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrats Frank W. Burke on January 3, 1963. Since he lost in 1964 against Charles R. Farnsley, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1965. In 1964 he was one of the few Republicans who voted against the Civil Rights Act.

In the elections of 1966, Snyder competed in the fourth district of Kentucky successfully to his return to the Congress. There he broke on January 3, 1967 from Frank Chelf. After nine elections he was able to complete in the House of Representatives until January 3, 1987 ten more coherent legislative periods. In this time were, among others, the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. 1986 Snyder decided not to run again. After that he held no other higher political office. Gene Snyder died on 16 February 2007 in Naples.
