General Carrera Lake

Lago Buenos Aires ( Argentina) or Lago General Carrera (Chile) is a lake in Argentina and Chile. It is situated in the Región de Aysen and in the province of Santa Cruz in the Argentine- Chilean border.

The Lago Buenos Aires / General Carrera lake has a total area of ​​approximately 1850 km ².

Accessible is the lake from the Chilean side of the highway Carretera Austral. From Puerto Ingeniero Ibáñez a ferry leads to Chile Chico, the trip takes about 2 1/ 2 hours. Chile Chico is a border town with Argentina.

The climate is due to the southern location already quite polar.

History

On the Argentine shore the village of Los Antiguos was from 1900 ( now small city). Settlement of the area began amplified from 1925. 1971 and 1991, the cities were covered by the lake of large ash fall of Cerro Hudson volcano. The volcano is located northwest of the lake with an altitude of 2600 m.

With the connection to the remote Carretera Austral in the early 1990s, a certain economic boom came to this remote area.

Economy

Fishing and forestry play an important role in the region. In Puerto Tranquilo on the Northwest coast of the lake, tourism is gaining importance because there are marble caves.
