General Electric T58

The General Electric T58 is a small shaft turbine of the U.S. manufacturer General Electric Company, which has been used since the 1950s in helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft. The series ended production in 1984 after more than 7000 copies made ​​. The civilian version CT58 received on 1 July 1959 for the type certificate by the Federal Aviation Administration.

History

1953 was granted by the U.S. Bureau of Aeronautics an order for 3 million dollars for the development of a small wave turbine, which make at least 800 WPS and not more than 400 should weigh lb (182 kg). The main purpose of the T58 use in U.S. Navy helicopters, turboprops and smaller as additional boosters for larger military and civilian aircraft was provided. In addition to use in water vehicles and tanks and industrial uses of the T58 under the name LM100 are known.

As a flying testbed Sikorsky HSS was equipped with two T58 instead of a radial engine in the nose, which first flew in this configuration on 30 January 1957. Even in a first flown in September 1957 Vertol H- 21C, the standard engine was replaced with two T58, after which the aircraft received the new designation H -21D.

The first helicopter that was designed from the outset for the use of the T58, was the Kaman HU2K -1, the Sikorsky S -62 received a T58 and the Sikorsky HSS -2 used ( after 1962 SH -3A ) two of the engines. Even with the Vertol 107 and the Fairchild VZ- 5, an experimental aircraft, the T58 was used. De Havilland was granted a license for the production of the T58 in Europe, which eventually as Rolls-Royce Gnome in Westland Sea King was used.
