General levelling of France

The level of Marseille is the high point of reference in France and ( with half the weight ) of Switzerland as well.

In the years 1884-1896 the sea level near Marseille was determined with a Mareografen. Then, the average was defined as the reference level. The tides are weak in the Mediterranean.

Over time, different definitions of the level Marseille were used, which, however, hardly be distinguished:

  • Bourdaloue zero from 1860
  • Lallemand - zero in 1897
  • IGN69 - zero by 1969.

Derived from the level Marseille is also the height fixed point Repère Pierre du Niton for the Swiss altitude. He is set to 373.6 meters above the level of Marseille since 1902.
