The General National Congress (Arabic المؤتمر الوطني العام, DMG al -Mu ʾ tamar al - Watani al - ʿ Amm, Berber ⴰ ⴳ ⵔ ⴰ ⵡ ⴰ ⵖ ⴻ ⵍ ⵏ ⴰ ⵡ ⴰ ⵎ ⴰ ⵜ ⵓ Agraw Aghelnaw Amatu ) is the highest legislative authority of Libya.

He was elected and replaced from August 8 to the National Transitional Council, which ruled the country since the end of the Libyan civil war by a popular election on 7 July 2012.

Tasks

The current Legislativsitzung was first elected on 7 July 2012. Other than initially intended by the Transitional Council, the General National Congress will not choose the members of the yet to be formed Constituent Committee. This plan met with resistance, especially from the eastern Libyan Cyrenaica region.

The Congress will elect a new prime minister and a new cabinet within 30 days of its first meeting held on 9 August 2012.

Current composition

The General National Congress consists of 200 members, of which 80 are elected through a party list system of proportional representation and by 120 as independents in single member districts. The western region has 102 deputies determined the eastern 60, the South 29, the Sirte and Dschufra enclosing central region 9
