Generation of '27

The Generación del 27 ( German generation of 27) was a group of writers that formed during the 1920s in Spain. 27 Some of the key authors of the Generación del Federico García Lorca, Pedro Salinas, Miguel Hernández, Rafael Alberti, Gerardo Diego, Luis Cernuda and Vicente Aleixandre. Almost all the members came from better-off families (apart from Miguel Hernández ) and studied during the 1920s at the University of Madrid. The group had no real leader. The only thing all brought together, was the admiration of Luis de Góngora. The group was formed during a celebration marking the 300th death anniversary of Góngora at the Ateneo of Seville. It had, however, each individual in the group its own style and its own ideology. The works of the members of the Generación del 27 are influenced by the desire to always produce an inner harmony. Thus one finds in the works repeatedly contrasts that will restore the balance. They were also always believed in search of the perfect shape, which they had found in the poem sonnet. Most issues discussed were the nature, love, frustration, death, society and politics.

One can distinguish two 27 creative phases in the history of the authors of the Generación del. The first phase relates to the period before 1927. Till then the style was generally oriented to very classical and romantic and the fabrics were more popular. García Lorca wrote, for example, at this stage mainly on his native Andalusia. Here the influence of writers such as Gustavo Adolfo Becquer was clear. In addition, many symbols were used as the crystal as a symbol of hope. In the period after 1927, one can generally recognize a tendency to Surrealism; Rhymes and classical metrics were no longer used in the poetry of this phase. In addition, other substances it was discovered, such as the current political situation ( Miguel Hernández in El Hombre acecha ). Such was the Generación del 27 open to both classical and romantic currents as well as for the surrealism.

Another characteristic of the Generación del 27 is that they ( the Generación del 98 was at the still dominant ) had overcome the pessimism of the disaster of 1898 and a spirit of optimism was evident. Modernity had reached Spain and the artists of the Generación del 27 were aware of this change: nothing would soon be as it once was. We observed this change, accepted him, but he was skeptical.

The name Generación del 27 was not an idea of the members themselves, but originates with the critics. Other names for the Generación del 27 are, among others: Generación de la Dictadura, Generación Guillén -Lorca or Generación de los Vanguardistas.
