Generic Mapping Tools

The Generic Mapping Tools or GMT is a collection of free software for the creation of geological or geographical maps and diagrams.

GMT provides tools to manipulate x, y and x, y, z data sets - eg by scanning, filtering, or different types of map projection. An extensive collection of freely available GIS data is included which contains coastlines, rivers, political boundaries, and the coordinates from other geographic features. Additional data ( satellite imagery, digital terrain models, etc. ) can be converted from other sources and imported. The resulting maps and diagrams are output (EPS) in Encapsulated PostScript format.

The system is optimized for the use of the command line to enable automatic batch processing. More or less extensive graphical user interfaces offered by third parties, such as the Interactive Mapping of Geoscientific Datasets ( IGMT ). Similarly, there are web applications, by which the functionality of the system can be made available online.

The Generic Mapping Tools are also used in tool box Spherekit.
