Genesius of Rome

Genesius of Rome († 286 or 305 ) was a Christian martyr. His feast day is August 25. Genesius is considered the patron saint of actors, performing artists, musicians, dancers and musicians. In art he is represented as a youth with a stringed instrument, masks and baptismal font.

Legend

The dated the 6th century Passio S. Genesii reported Genesius, an actor at the court of the well-known also for his persecution of Christians in the Roman emperor Diocletian ( emperor 284-305 ), have repeatedly mocked the Christians in his performances. During such a comedy he had, in mock fear of death, baptism requested, but it suddenly recognized Christ and accepted the baptism played as true. He had held a conversion sermon to the Emperor and the public and was subsequently beheaded.

In the 8th century, the French Abbey of Saint -Genis- des-Fontaines was named after him and in the 9th century, the monastery rails on Lake Constance ( today part of Oehningen ). One of the churches with Genesius- patronage is the parish church of San Genesio in South Tyrol; at the same place a Genesius could have existed chapel dedicated since about 500 AD; Genesius is on the place name Genesio due.
