A genetic counseling, often referred to as genetic counseling, serves genetically ( with ) related diseases or risks for diseases to recognize and understand. It is used by doctors of Human Genetics ( in Austria Specialists in Medical Genetics ) carried out, which have a special experience with hereditary diseases, both in diagnosis and in the care of affected individuals and families. A genetic counseling is performed non-directive, it will therefore not made any recommendation. Rather backgrounds are explained and misunderstandings are cleared, so that individuals are able to make the right decisions for them yourself.

A genetic counseling can be helpful for example in fertility or heaping cancers in the family. In the presence of hereditary disease in a family is informed about the course as well as opportunities for prevention or treatment; in case of infertility can be said about the probability of occurrence of a genetic disorder in a child. If during pregnancy the maturing child suspected of having a genetic disease has been made, a genetic counseling can help to ensure that the significance of the findings is properly understood and so that decisions can be avoided that might be regretted later.

A genetic counseling should always be value-free. Value end of terms such as " genetic compatibility " or " defective genes " are avoided in the context of genetic counseling.

Genetic counseling is in Germany a performance of all statutory health insurance and private health insurance and is therefore paid by them.
