Geneva is a city in the U.S. state of New York. It is located in Ontario County. The population was 2000 13.617 inhabitants according to the census year. Whether the city's name is derived from the English word "Geneva" for the Swiss city of Geneva or from the word " Seneca " was derived ( for resident Indian tribe Seneca ) by incorrect spelling, is unclear.

History

Originally, the settlement here Canada saga of counting to the Iroquois Indians of the Seneca people. The British established here an attachment against the French and later against the Americans. After the destruction of the settlement by the Sullivan Expedition in 1779 the settlement was initially abandoned but resettled by Europeans around 1793.

According to the census of 2000, there were 13,617 people; were counted 5,014 households and 2,933 families. The population density was 1,234 inhabitants per km ². There 5,564 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 81.52 % White, 10.22 % African American, 0.25 % Native American, 1.23 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander residents from the and 3.39 % from other ethnic groups; 3.34 % said the lineage of several ethnicities. 8.50 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,014 households out of which 29.5 % have children living with them. 38.6 % were married couples living together, 15.9 % had a female householder with no husband, and 41.5 % were non-families. 34.1 % of all households are made up and 14.8% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size 3.03.

The population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 18.9 % from 18 to 24, 24.3% 25-44 years, 18.1% from 45 to 64 years and 15.5 % of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.5 males.

The median income for a household (median) was $ 31,600, and the median income for a family $ 41,224. Males have a median income of $ 31,315, women $ 23,054. The per capita income was $ 15,609. Under the poverty line 13.7 % of families and 17.5 % of the population, including 27.2 % of the population under the age of 18 and 7.8 % of the population lived at the age of 65 years or older.
