Gennadi Mikhailovich Strekalow (Russian Геннадий Михайлович Стрекалов, scientific transliteration Gennady Michajlovič Strekalov; born October 28, 1940 in Mytischtschi, Moscow Oblast, Russian SFSR, † December 25, 2004 in Moscow) was a Soviet cosmonaut and was part of the crew of the Mir space station.

Strekalow studied at the Moscow State Technological University of the engineering for the Soviet missile program. He stood since March 27, 1973 in the service of the Russian space authorities and launched in 1980 his first flight into space. To 17 January 1995, he had participated in a total of five Soviet space missions. He was a member from 1987 to 2002 to the Soyuz missions from 1990 to 1995 he was a member of the Russian Mir strain crews. Overall, he was during his life 268 days, 22 hours and 22 minutes in space. Strekalow was provided with many awards. After its first flight in 1980, he received the highest award of the USSR, the title of " Hero of the Soviet Union."

Known worldwide Strekalow was in September 1983 when he was able to save at the last second together with Vladimir Titov. They were at that time from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on the flight into space, as the Soyuz rocket began shortly after the ignition of the engines directly on the launch pad fire. Seconds before the explosion of the rocket, the emergency rescue system brought the landing capsule Soyuz T -10-1 with the two cosmonauts from the danger zone.

In 1990 Strekalow made ​​during his space flight to the space station Mir again stir. He refused to perform safety reasons a spacewalk. Then the state some of its benefits to him were deleted.
