Gennadi Volnov

Gennadi Georgijewitsch Wolnow (Russian Геннадий Георгиевич Вольнов, English transcription Gennadi Georgiyevich Volnov; born November 28, 1939 in Moscow, Soviet Union, † 15 July, 2008 Konakovo ) was a former Soviet basketball player. As a player Wolnow was with the national basketball team of the USSR Olympic, world and European champions. He was one of the most successful basketball players of his time.

Club career

The career of Gennadi Wolnow began in 1957 in the highest Soviet League Spartak Moscow. After just one year he was appointed CSKA Moscow. With CSKA, he spent thirteen successful years. He won a total of three times with CSKA the European Champions Cup. There were also eight Soviet championships. After the official end of his career he played one year at Burewestnik and Dynamo Moscow. His jersey with the number 13 is hanging under the roof of the CSKA Universal Sports Hall in which CSKA denies its home games.

Career in the national team

The first major tournament on the national team was the European Championship 1959 in Turkey, which he won with the team of the Soviet Union for Wolnow. At this European title five more titles were added in succession. He was elected to the MVP of the tournament at the European Championships in 1965 and EM 1969. Also successful was he with the Soviet Union at the World Championships. While in the 1963 World Cup, only the third place was achieved in the final result, it succeeded Wolnow with the USSR at the next World Cup in 1967 winning the title. In this tournament, he was again elected MVP. Gennadi Wolnow has participated in a total of four Olympic tournaments.
