Genolier

Genolier is a municipality in the district of Nyon in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Genolier is located on 547 m above sea level. Level, 6 km north of the district main town Nyon ( straight line ). The village is located on the lower Jura south slope, west of the stream Ruisseau d' Oujon, in a scenic location around 170 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​4.8 km ² large municipality area includes a section on the lower Jura south slope. The communal land extends from the Jura foothills north to in the forest area of the Cotes de Genolier. Below Arzier is 660 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Genolier. The area is drained by the streams Ruisseau d' Oujon and Ruisseau de Montand, who bear the name Ruisseau de Cordex after their confluence. Population

With 1808 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Genolier belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 72.0 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 12.6 % in German and 9.7 % English speaking (as of 2000). The population of Genolier amounted in 1850 to 315 residents in 1900 to 366 inhabitants. After 1970 (387 inhabitants ) continued a rapid increase in population with a quadrupling of the population within 30 years.

Economy

History

Seen from the remains of a foundry from the Roman period and cemeteries from the Middle Ages indicate an early settlement of the municipality. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1110 under the name Genolliacum; later published the names Genollei ( 1162 ), Genollie and 1867 Genollier. 1184 a small priory was founded in Genolier, but which could never develop properly because of the proximity to the Cistercian abbey Bonmont and Charterhouse of Oujon ( at Arzier ) itself. The village belonged partly to the Lords of Mont, partly those of Prangins 1528 and came finally to the rule Prangins.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Genolier came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Nyon. After the collapse of the ancien régime Genolier belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Nyon.

Attractions

The Protestant parish church of Notre-Dame was first mentioned in 1110. The single nave united style of the Romanesque and Gothic periods. The façade design originated in 1526. In the village square there is a fountain from 1832. Center in a typical farmhouse of the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved.
