Geoff Murphy

Geoff Murphy ( born June 13, 1946) is a New Zealand film director and writer. He became internationally known through his sci-fi thriller Freejack - hostage of the future, as the second director, he has worked with, among others, the Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson.

Life

The Early Years

Murphy grew up in Highbury, Wellington, New Zealand and went there to the St. Vincent de Paul School in Kelburn and later on St. Patrick 's College, Wellington. Subsequently, he studied and began to work as a teacher.

Early Works

Murphy made ​​a name for itself by the New Zealand road movie Goodbye, Pork Pie (1981 ), in which the two main characters go with a yellow mini once from north to south through New Zealand, where they provide a race with the police. This film has achieved cult status in New Zealand. After that follow the Māori Western Utu (1983 ) and the sci-fi film Quiet Earth - The last experiment (1985 ), both with Bruno Lawrence.

Hollywood

Motivated by the successes in their own country went Murphy in the 90s to Hollywood, where he produced films with a larger budget, including Blaze of Glory - Blazing glory or Freejack - hostage of the future.

Return to New Zealand

Murphy later returned to New Zealand to work as the second director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson. He also directed the thriller starring Cliff Curtis Spooked.
