Geoffrey Leech

Geoffrey Leech ( born January 16, 1936), is a philologist, linguist and philologist. He was from 1974 to 2002 Professor of Linguistics and Modern English Language at Lancaster University. Thereafter he devoted himself to the study of the English language. Since 2002 he is professor emeritus of linguistics at the University of Lancaster.

Life and work

Main interest

Primarily, Leech involved in the semantics, pragmatics, stylistics, corpus analysis and the analysis of the English language through the use of computers. After a break of 20 years he has been researching now again active in the field of pragmatics. According to him, there is a politeness principle with conversational maxims similar to those that Paul Grice has formulated. Since the year 2005, in which he won 25 ( PALA = Poetic and Linguistic Association) award for her book Style and Fiction ( Longman, 1981) with his colleague Mick Short to PALA, he again began to work more with the Stylistics. A few years ago, in 2007, the two authors brought out a second edition of Style and Fiction.

Career and academic degrees

Leech studied 1955-1968 at UCL (University College London ), where he was a lecturer from 1962 to 1965 and from 1965 to 1969 professor of English at the same employed. At UCL, he completed the following degrees: BA (1959), M.A. (1963 ), Ph.D. (1968). In addition, Leech received the following degrees: Fil.Dr. ( Honorary doctorate ), Lund University (1987 ), Hon.D.Litt. , University of Wolverhampton (2002), D.Litt. , University of Lancaster ( 2002). In 1969 Leech joined the University of Lancaster to there until 1974 as a Lector from 1974 to 1996 as Professor of Linguistics and Modern English Language to be hired. From the year 1996 he was concerned, still active on behalf of the University of Lancaster, as a Research Professor in English Linguistics with the exploration of the English language. Since 2002, Leech is a professor emeritus of English linguistics.
