Geoffrey of Trani

Goffredus de Trano (* 1200 in Trani, † April 11, 1245 in Lyon, also Godefridus de Trano, Gaufridus de Trano, Goffredus Tranensis, Godfrey of Trani, Italian: Goffredo da Trani ) was a medieval jurist.

Goffredus studied in Bologna with Azo. He worked as a teacher of law in Naples and Bologna, and was in 1240 as "auditor ", ie Judges appointed to the Curia in Rome. Innocent IV appointed him on May 28, 1244 cardinal deacon of S. Adriano; as such he signed papal documents from 23 January to 3 April 1245th

His principal work is the "Summa super rubricis decretalium ", which is also referred to as "Summa titulorum decretalium " or "Summa super titulis decretalium ". They were created between end 1241 and mid- 1243. It is a textbook to that of Gregory IX. commissioned Dekretalensammlung, which is commonly known as the Liber Extra.

Goffredus ' textbook is distinguished by its clear and understandable language, its focus on practical issues of clergy, and through its unique solutions of contentious issues. Therefore, it experienced a wide spread and gained great influence, especially among the members of the Roman Curia.
