Geograph Britain and Ireland

Geographer is a web-based free project, which was launched in March 2005 in the UK as a geographer Britain and Ireland. As part of the project, the region in question is divided into 1- km ² squares. The aim is to collect representative photos within each square. Since 2008, the same project for Germany.

Construction

As a basis for the squares the UTM reference system ( = Military Grid Reference System) is used.

The project is designed as a competition. Target individual is to capture as many square as possible. It offer a wide variety of rankings and analysis options.

Every registered user can upload photos. Submitted images will be checked by moderators and classified in two ways:

Geograph - Only for images in this category, you can get a point. A geographer - point is obtained when the image is the first in each square. To get as many representative images, but it is strongly encouraged to submit multiple images within a square. In addition, the submitter will receive for each first for himself Geograph in a square a personal point.

Extra Picture ( Supplemental ) - As an extra picture images are classified, which do not represent the square itself and show, for example, parts of buildings or plant in closeup.

Images can also be rejected if they are not certain quality standards.

In Geograph Britain and Ireland, containing much more pictures than geographer Germany, rules were introduced, after which you can also get points for the second, third and fourth image within a square.

The uploaded photos are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution- Share-Alike license, so that the images may be used under certain conditions as the identifying of the owner.

Geograph Britain and Ireland had on 15 October 2008 recorded its millionth image, reaching on 17 May 2012, a coverage of 80 % of the squares. In June 2012, the third millionth image was submitted.

Reception

Geograph Britain and Ireland has achieved a high level of awareness and was, inter alia, with the Yahoo Travel place of the Year Award 2006.
