Geographical Institute of Weimar

The Geographical Institute in Weimar was an important German publisher of maps and globes. It was founded on 1 April 1804 by Friedrich Justin Bertuch and was a daughter of his publisher extensive country - industry - Comptoirs to stimulate the economy and society in Saxony- Weimar.

Here engraver and cartographer who worked, atlases, general and special maps of the individual continents and countries, hand and travel maps, physical, geological and astronomical charts, moon maps, terrestrial and celestial globes manufactured. Also the Geographical Institute pertinent unpublished journals and geographical- statistical yearbooks. Leading the way here is the 1798 published already in the country - Industrie-Comptoir first scientific Geographic Magazine: General Geographical ephemeris.

The scientific publication concerned, inter alia, Franz Xaver von Zach, Adam Christian Gaspari, Heinrich Kiepert, Karl and Adolf Graef, Carl Ferdinand Weiland, Julius Kettler, Carl Riemer and Karl Christian Bruhns.

1822 was the institution after the death of Friedrich von Bertuch Froriep about 1845 to his son Robert Froriep 1855 finally to Louis Denicke from Lüneburg, 1858 Voigt & Günther, F. Arnd later ( until 1883 ), then 1890-1893 Julius Kettler, 1903 to Max Wedekind.
