Georg Christian Unger

Georg Christian Unger ( born May 25, 1743 Bayreuth, † February 20, 1799 in Berlin) was a German architect and builder of Frederick the Great in Potsdam and Berlin. He was a student of Carl von Gontard.

Life's work

For about 260 buildings Unger provided the designs, many of which he produced himself, he developed from the claim of Frederick II a new building type: the citizens Palais, a bourgeois house with the feel of a palace. In Berlin, Unger created a large number of buildings: Only 40 Unter den Linden, 13 Palais am Gendarmenmarkt and over 40 in the Leipziger Straße.

  • Construction of the Berlin house cadets (1776-1779)
  • Front building of the Long Stalls in Potsdam (1781 )
  • Hunter jumper with colonnades in Berlin ( 1782 )
  • Towers at the German and the French Cathedral in Berlin (along with Carl von Gontard, 1780-1785 )
  • Brandenburg Gate in Potsdam (field side, the city side to plans Gontard, 1770)
  • Hiller- Czech houses in Potsdam (1769 )
