Georg Ebers

Georg Moritz Ebers (* March 1, 1837 in Berlin, † August 7, 1898 in Tutzing ) was a German Egyptologist and writer. With its historical novels and popular science books he contributed to the great popularity of Egyptology in the late 19th century.

Life

Georg Ebers came from the Berlin Jewish haute bourgeoisie. Both parents were converted to Christianity. Boar was sent by his mother to Keilhau near Rudolstadt in the local boys' reformatory. Since there is no final exams were taken, he attended from 1852 the Gymnasium in Cottbus. Because of its relationship with an actress he had to leave high school and was able to make his high school until 1857 in Quedlinburg.

Ebers first studied law at the Georg -August- University, where he joined the Corps Saxonia Göttingen joined. Soon he was more interested and more for ancient Egypt. His teacher in the study of the hieroglyphs was Richard Lepsius. 1865 Ebers habilitated in Jena and became a Privatdozent, 1869 Associate Professor of Egyptology.

Appointed in 1870 as an associate professor in Leipzig, he received in 1875 the chair. Since 1876 seriously ill, he was given emeritus status in 1889 prematurely. He spent his life in Munich.

1869/70 and 1872/73 led Ebers two research trips to Egypt by, where he acquired the eponymous Ebers Papyrus, an extensive medical manual from the mid-2nd millennium BC (now in the papyrus and Ostrakasammlung Leipzig University Library ).

Ebers in 1895 was inducted into the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He was also a member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences in Leipzig.

He was married to Antonie nee Beck widowed Loesevitz. From the marriage of son Paul and daughter Mary Sophia went, called Marie ( born February 4, 1871 in Leipzig ), protruding, who married on 10 August 1894 former Leipzig lecturer Triepel Heinrich ( 1868-1946 ). Triepel was appointed as Professor of Constitutional and International Law in Tübingen, Kiel and Berlin as one of the most famous jurists of the time. Marie Triepel wrote in September 1949 memoirs, which have remained unpublished.

Artistic creation

Starting with An Egyptian king's daughter (1864 ) wrote Ebers numerous historical novels, which were met with great reader interest. Besides Felix Dahn he is regarded as the leading exponent of "Professor novel". The themes of the novels he chose in part from the context of his scientific work, so of Egyptian history, but also from other periods ( Middle Ages).

From 1879 to 1884 Ebers was the " book artistically intricate " luxury volumes Egypt in word and image, as well as Palestine in picture and word out: Fields marked with 700 woodcuts illustrated books were after designs by 40 renowned artists and Orientalists mainly in Stuttgart Xylographic Institute of Eduard Hallberger produces and publishes.
