Georg Hartung

Georg Hartung (* 1822, † 1891) was a German geologist and author. He was known for his work on the geology and geological history of the Azores and the Canary Islands.

Life

Accompanied Hartung 1853/54 the British geologist Sir Charles Lyell on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Lyell operation there, the field research for the essay "On the Geology of Some Parts of Madeira ". The findings on the geology, morphology, paleontology and flora and fauna of the island were also incorporated in Lyell's work "Elements of Geology " (1865) and the edition of the " Principles of Geology " in 1868. The two combined a strong teacher-student ratio, Lyell spoke of Hartung as one of its most active workers.

In 1857 Hartung explored the Azores and presented his findings in 1860 in the book " The Azores in your appearance and after their geognostical nature" before. A description of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo followed in 1864, the studies to he operated from 1850 to 1854. A work on the volcanism, he published in 1862 under the title "Reflections on survey crater, older and newer Eruptivmassen together with a description of the geology of the island of Gran Canaria ".

In addition to Lyell Hartung maintained contact also to other major English naturalists such as Charles Darwin.
