Georg Hermann Nicolai

Georg Hermann Nicolai ( born January 10, 1811 in Torgau, † July 10, 1881 in the bottom stream in Decin (Bohemia ) ) was a German architect and professor. On him and his predecessor Gottfried Semper Semper Nicolai school goes back, which produced a characteristic variety of the Neo-Renaissance architecture in Saxony.

Life

Nicolai studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden at Thürmer Joseph (1789-1833) and later at the Art Academy in Munich under Friedrich von Gärtner.

One extensive study tour of Italy and to Paris in 1834 and 1835 was followed by an initial phase of successful professional activity in Dresden. 1840 took Nicolai Another mission that led to Greece and Turkey via Italy. From 1841 or 1842 to 1845 he worked as a master builder in Coburg under Duke Ernst I. and Duke Ernst II of Saxe -Coburg and Gotha. From 1845 to 1848 he ran his own architectural office in Frankfurt am Main, where he worked for Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Hesse- Kassel and Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse -Darmstadt. In the years 1848 and 1849 traveled Nicolai UK and Spain.

In the summer of 1850, he was the successor of the fleeing because of participation in the May uprising in Dresden Semper as a professor of Bauateliers the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. Nicolai brought in Dresden the style of the Saxon neo full bloom, which was more widespread than so-called Semper Nicolai School also by many of his students. Among his pupils were, among others, Bruno Adam and George Aster. In 1874, Nicolai was appointed as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Nicolai applied in 1881 because of a neck suffering his retirement, but died a short time later on a trip. He was buried in the Trinity Cemetery in Dresden Johann city. His successor at the Art Academy was his former student Constantin Lipsius ( 1832-1894 ).
