Georg Luck

Georg Luck ( born February 17, 1926 in Bern, † February 17, 2013 in Baltimore ) was a Swiss- American Classic philologist.

Luck studied classical philology at the Universities of Bern and Zurich. The Smith -mouth Fellowship enabled him 1951/1952 to stay in the United States. At Harvard University put Luck in 1952 the master exam from. He then worked as a lecturer at Yale University (1952/1953), then returned for the purpose of promotion ( with Walter Wili ) briefly to Bern and then worked at Brown University, in 1955 at Harvard University. After a year of research as a Guggenheim Fellow (1958/1959) Luck went back to Europe and habilitated in 1960 at the University of Mainz. After two years as a lecturer, he was appointed in 1962 as full professor at the University of Bonn. Here he worked for ten years, until he returned to the United States in 1972 and was appointed Full Professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University. In 1990 he became Professor Emeritus.

To Lucks research focus was on Roman poetry ( Tibullus, Propertius, Ovid, Lucan ), Cynicism and the ancient magic. His writings appeared in English and German language.
