Georg Theodor August Gaffky

Georg Theodor August Gaffky ( born February 17, 1850 in Hannover, † September 23, 1918 ) was a German physician and bacteriologist.

Professional career

He was a student of Robert Koch and had as his colleague large proportion of its discoveries. In 1884 he succeeded in culturing the typhoid pathogen in pure culture and the detection of Salmonella.

1883 to 1884 he was a companion of cooking on trips through Egypt and India. In 1885 he joined the staff at the Imperial Health Office in Berlin. 1888 Gaffky Professor of Hygiene at the Justus -Liebig- University of Giessen and founded the Institute for Medical Microbiology casting. 1892 Gaffky was temporarily employed by the cholera epidemic as an advisor to the Hamburg Senate for the development of Hygienic Institute, he also wrote the final report. In 1896 he was head of the Pestexpedition of the German Reich to Bombay. In 1904 he became director of the later Robert Koch Institute in Berlin. He was awarded the title go. Medizinalrat excellent.
