Georg Trexler

Georg Trexler ( born February 9, 1903 in Pirna, † December 15, 1979 in Leipzig ) was a German church musician, music teacher and composer.

Life

In Plauen, the son of a glassmaker master received his first music lessons. At the age of 16, he appeared as a conductor of Der Freischütz and Egmont ( incidental music ) in appearance.

After completing a bank apprenticeship in Plauen, Dresden Trexler went in 1924 to the University of Leipzig to study economics and law.

Through encounters with Wilhelm Furtwangler and Karl Straube he felt increasingly drawn to music, and he in 1927 a study of church music in the subjects of music theory, organ and piano tackled. Special interest he showed to the piano pieces of Paul Hindemith.

As a student Trexler worked as a cantor and organist at the Church of Our Lady Lindenau, later at the Parish Church of St. Trinity Leipzig. This was followed by lectures at the Institute for Church Music in the country Conservatory, later the College of Music until he was called up into the army in 1940. Upon his return from American captivity, he taught at the 1946 reopened Musikhochschule Leipzig priority score game as well as in the field of virtuoso and liturgical organ playing.

He was in 1947 appointed director of church music, and in 1948 professor.

As a composer, he was known primarily for his orchestral works, as well as cantatas, the high recognition found. Successful Trexler was also in the field of chamber music and music for children. His compositional output includes both religious as well as secular works.

1967 awarded him by Pope Paul VI. New Year's Medal in recognition of his services.
