Georg Vierling

Georg Vierling ( born September 5, 1820 Frankenthal, † June 1, 1901 in Wiesbaden ) was a German composer, organist and conductor.

Life

Georg Vierling was first taught by his father, the organist Johann Jakob Vierling ( 1797-1867 ). He then studied at the court organist Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt and in 1842 with Adolf Bernhard Marx in Berlin. In 1847 he became organist in Frankfurt ( Oder), and later leader of the local Academy of Music, here he was, together with the musicians of the Chapel Theatre Bach oratorios and Passions list. In 1853 he became head of the choral society in Mainz.

Vierling worked from 1854 in Berlin as a composer, conductor and tutor. In 1857 he founded the Bach -Verein, which he headed until 1868 and 1859, he was Prussian royal music director. In 1882 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin and later elected to the Senate. In addition to numerous honors bestowed were him, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Berlin.

His compositions are based on its classic predecessors, but have a contemporary modern conception. His oratorios Constantin and The Rape of the Sabine Women have received international recognition. Vierling wrote songs, singing compositions for mixed choir with and without accompaniment, piano and organ works, overtures and a symphony. Vierlings special merit was his commitment to musical life in Frankfurt / Oder and to the performance of Bach's vocal works.

He was buried in the cemetery Columbiadamm in Berlin.
