George A. Elliott

George Arthur Elliott ( born January 30, 1945 in Montreal ) is a Canadian mathematician who deals with operator algebras, algebraic K-theory and noncommutative geometry. He is a professor at the University of Toronto on a Canada Research Chair.

Elliott studied at Queen's University (Kingston ) (Master 's degree in 1966 ) and at the University of Toronto where he received his doctorate in Israel Halperin 1969 ( Derivations of matroid C * Algebras ). As a post - graduate student he was at Queen 's University and the University of British Columbia and 1971/72 at the Institute for Advanced Study. From 1972 he was assistant professor at the University of Copenhagen. 1979 to 1985 he was also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa and from 1984 at the University of Toronto, where he has a full professorship today.

It deals with operator algebras as C * algebras and von Neumann algebras and their classification, as well as their applications in quantum field theory and quantum statistics and noncommutative geometry (in the sense of Alain Connes ). The classification of AF C *-algebras by means of their K0 - groups is known as a set of Elliott.

He was a guest scientist and visiting professor and he University of Newcastle ( 1974), at the Australian National University (1984 ), at the MSRI (1985 ), the University of Warwick (1982 ), the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques in Montreal (1991 ), the University of New South Wales, University College Swansea (1993) and is since 1996 Senior Distinguished members of the Fields Institute.

In 1996 he received the CRM -Fields - PIMS Prize, the 1998 Jeffery -Williams Prize and the 1999 John L. Synge Award. In 1982 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 2012 and he is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich (The classification of a problem amenable C * algebras ). 1996 to 1998 he was Killam Fellow.

He is married since 1974 with mathematics professor (Queen 's University ) Noriko Yui.
