George A. Mathews

George Arthur Mathews ( born June 4, 1852 in Potsdam, New York, † April 19, 1941 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician.

Mathews graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette and later attended the Law School of the University of Iowa in Iowa City. In 1878 he was admitted to the legal profession and practiced in Corning. A year later he moved to the city of Brookings in the Dakota Territory (now South Dakota) and continued to practice there.

1884 Mathews was attorney of the fifth judicial district in Dakota Territory. He was elected as a Republican to the 51st Congress, and represented there as a delegate of the Dakota Territory on 4 March 1889 to 2 November 1889, when the territory was transformed into a federal state, in the U.S. House of Representatives. From 1897 to 1903 he was mayor of Brookings and then practiced again in his old job. 1910 Mathews retired and moved to Los Angeles. He died there in 1941. His ashes were buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.
