George Alexander Parks

George Alexander Parks (* May 29, 1883 in Denver, Colorado; † 11 MAY 1984 Juneau, Alaska ) was an American politician ( Republican) and 1925-1933 Governor of the Alaska Territory.

George Parks made ​​in 1906 graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden and worked as a mining engineer in the western United States, Canada and Mexico, before settling in 1907 in Alaska. Between 1908 and 1926 he held various positions there; among other things, he served as head of the competent for the territory Land Office. During World War II he served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

U.S. President Calvin Coolidge nominated parks in the wake of Scott Cordelle Bone as Governor of Alaska Territory; this post he took up on 17 April 1925. During his lasting until April 19, 1933 term, the current state flag of Alaska was first used. After leaving the governorship, he remained in government service and became an engineer in charge of cadastral maps of the Land Office. Later he went back to the private sector and worked as an engineer for a construction company based in Juneau; in this city, he served also as Vice- President of the First National Bank.

At the George Parks ' honor in 1975 the Parks Highway (Alaska Route 3 ), which runs from Anchorage to Fairbanks, named after him. He died in May 1984, shortly before his 101st birthday, in Juneau.
