George Armitage Miller

George Armitage Miller ( born February 3, 1920 in Charleston, West Virginia; † July 22, 2012 in Plainsboro, New Jersey) was an American psychologist. He was since 1979 Professor at Princeton University.

Life

Miller graduated in 1940 from the University of Alabama and received his PhD in 1946 at Harvard University. In 1968 he became a professor at the Rockefeller University in New York City.

His major work, The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on our Capacity for Processing Information about the Miller number appeared in 1956 in The Psychological Review.

1968 to 1969 he was president of the American Psychological Association.

In 1990, Miller received the award William James Book Award for the book The Science of Words ( German title words. Forays into psycholinguistics ). In 1991 he received the National Medal of Science.
