George Atwood

George Atwood (* October 1745 in London, † July 11, 1807 in Westminster, London ) was an English physicist and inventor.

Life and work

Atwood attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he received his doctorate and a Fellow took over teaching duties. 1776, he became a member of the Royal Society. In 1784 he published the textbook A Treatise on the Rectilinear Motion, in which he describes named after him Atwood 's machine, a device for detecting the laws of the free fall of bodies. Atwood published in 1804 an analysis of a course on the principles of physics.
