In 1948 he became an Australian and British champion and won at the Olympic Games in London with his personal best of 15.365 m silver medal behind the Swede Arne Åhman ( 15,40 m ) and before the Turks Ruhi Sarıalp ( 15.025 m). The following year he was national runner-up.
