George Baird (athlete)

George Hetzel Baird ( born March 5, 1907 in Grand Iceland, Nebraska; † 4 September 2004 in Rhinebeck, New York) was an American sprinter and Olympic gold medalist who was successful in the late 1920s in the 400 -meter run. He started for the University of Iowa.

Baird ran in 1928 as a member of the U.S. team set two world records in the 4 x 400 - meter relay:

  • On August 5 at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam: in front of Germany ( silver in 3:14,8 min ) and Canada (Bronze: Gold in 3:14,2 min ( Baird, Emerson Spencer, Alderman Fred and Ray Barbuti team ) 3:15,4 min). Although Baird had won the Olympic Trials in 48.8 s, he did not go in the individual race at the start.
  • August 11, 1928 in London: 3:13,4 min (Team: Baird, Hurdle specialist Morgan Taylor, Barbuti and Spencer )

After ending his career George Baird met with his brother Bill as a puppeteer. Later he became professor of education at New York University.
