George Browne (soldier)

Georg Count von Browne ( born June 15, 1698 Limerick, Ireland, † September 18, 1792 in Riga) or Seóirse de Brún ( Irish) was a Field Marshal of the Russian army from an old Irish nobility.

After studying in his native city, he entered in 1725, first in Palatine and 1730 as a lieutenant commander in the Russian service. Here he lent his hand in suppressing a mutiny against the Empress Anna, so that he could ascend to the Colonel soon. Browne took part in all since then to 1762 ausgefochtenen wars and battles of Russia.

During the Seven Years War, he was severely wounded as general -in-chief in anger village. Georg Count von Browne was married to Helen Countess of Lacy, daughter of Peter Graf von Lacy. Her son Georg Graf Browne is buried along with his uncle Franz Moritz Graf von Lacy in the Crypt in Vienna.
